UNDERSTANDING OUR EYES FOR HEALTHIER VISION

Our eyes are the first windows into how we perceive the world. Vision performance affects how we work, connect with our surroundings, explore the world, and live our everyday lives. To protect and safeguard this complex and fragile sensorial organ against conditions and diseases, we at Seiko believe it is imperative to have a well-rounded understanding of the eye and how it functions.

ANATOMY OF THE EYE

The eye is a complex and highly-nuanced organ that operates much like a digital camera. Firstly, light reflects off an object to the eye. The cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) acts like a camera lens and focuses the light. The iris (the colored part of the eye) then retracts to shut out light or opens wide to let in more light, just like the shutter of a camera. The lens of the eye then focuses the light on the retina (light-sensitive inner lining of the back of the eye) which acts like an electronic image sensor of a camera, and converts optical images into electronic signals. The optic nerve then transmits these signals to the brain and transforms them into images, all within millions of a second.

VISION CONDITIONS

Given the complexity of the eye and its functioning, it can sometimes result in certain vision conditions. To provide perfectly-made solutions for each condition, Seiko offers lenses that cater to each individual need with precision.

EMMETROPIA

Emmetropia is a state of vision where the eye has no visual defects. Visuals are perfectly focused, clear and precise, and the person experiences ideal vision.

MYOPIA

The most common refractive error of the eye, myopia or near-sightedness, is a condition where distant objects are difficult to see clearly, while nearby objects appear normal. This occurs because the eye focuses light in front of, instead of on, the retina.

HYPEROPIA

Hyperopia, or farsightedness is a condition of the eye where objects that are close are difficult to see clearly, while distant objects appear normal. This occurs because light rays entering the eye focus behind the retina, instead of on it.

ASTIGMATISM

Astigmatism is a condition of the eye where vision is distorted to some degree at all distances. It is usually caused by an irregularly shaped cornea, and can be present with other eye conditions like Myopia or Hyperopia.

PRESBYOPIA

Presbyopia is a natural phenomenon that occurs past the age of forty, and is characterised by difficulty in focusing on near objects. This happens due to loss of elasticity of the lens of the eye over time.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Since our eyes are vital to everything we do, it is imperitive that we take good care of them and ensure our vision health remains in the best possible condition. It is critical therefore, to keep a look-out for common symptoms, and address them with an eye-care professional.

BLURRED VISION

If you often find yourself squinting or blinking to obtain clear vision, you may be suffering from loss of sharp eyesight. This can be either caused by refractive errors like Myopia, Hyperopia, Astigmatism or Presbyopia; or by more serious eye diseases. A qualified eye-care professional will be able to conduct a complete eye exam and determine the cause of blurred vision.

EYE STRAIN & FATIGUE

Everyday life in front of a screen may cause stress and strain on the eyes. This stress may lead to less blinking, resulting in symptoms such as irritation, dryness, and overall discomfort. In order to help avoid such effects, it is key to help filter out unhealthy high energy visible light by wearing the correct type of lenses.

DRY EYE SYNDROME

Dry Eye Syndrome or Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca occurs when the eye reduces the production of tears. Apart from dryness, symptoms can include burning or itching. Use of artificial tears can significantly reduce this syndrome. However, if it persists an eye-care professional should be consulted.

NECK & SHOULDER PAIN

Progressive lens wearers may tilt their head posture to look through the appropriate part of the vertical progression, especially for near work. This can sometimes put a strain on the neck and shoulder muscles. Using specialist Indoor lenses can help improve posture and avoid muscle pain.
